Wig factories will never tell you a key point in their actual process for creating wigs and weaves. In this process, hair cuticles on the hair are peeled by several chemical processes so that the hair won’t get tangled when you begin to use the wig.
The cuticle is the outer protective layer that a part of each human hair strand and is responsible for the shine and texture of human hair. Generally, the cuticle is smooth, allowing shine and limiting friction between the hair shafts. It is composed of layers of overlapping cells and covered by an invisible, water-resistant lipid layer, which acts as a natural hair conditioner. Healthy human hair consists of 5-10 layers of cuticles, but hair that has been processed for a wig only has about 2-3 layers, while some low-quality wigs have no cuticles at all. That is why some low-quality wigs look good in beginning but tend to end up in knots after a week or so of use. In addition, because the water-resistant lipid layer has also been destroyed, the wig cannot last very long.
Cuticles are the first line of defense against damage. Without these layers of protection, the core fiber would be far more vulnerable to simple things like every day combing, heat, sun exposure or even normal shampooing. Therefore, your wigs need to be treated with a very mild, dedicated cleaning product. Please be sure to NEVER use shampoo meant for natural hair while washing your wigs and weaves. A typical hair shampoo is too harsh and will end up stripping the hair cuticles and can lead to dry hair, tangling, and a shorter life expectancy.
